This review is different from most of what we publish, and I want to say why at the top. Most of this site is a records-and-evidence job: pull the listing, the FDA entry, the complaints, the price history, and give you the short answer. This one is personal. I have used the Orb Audio Booster Basic Soundbar every day for years. I bought it, I am not paid by anyone to mention it, and it is the reason I can follow a Zoom call without asking people to repeat themselves. Credit where it is due: Orb Audio makes a product that solved a problem nothing else solved for me.

Manufacturer facts

• Product: Orb Audio “BOOSTER BASIC Soundbar – EZ Voice Dialogue Clarity.” Two 4.25-inch Orb Mod1 speakers with “aluminum drivers, long throw CCAD voice coils, neodymium magnets,” driven by a separate 50-watt Class D amplifier. Stated frequency response 120 Hz to 18 kHz. Product page.
• The clarity claim, in their words: a proprietary “EZ Voice” mode that “enhances dialogue” and delivers “greater clarity at lower volume.” That is the marketing. My experience below is the test of it.
• Inputs and outputs: optical, two stereo mini (3.5 mm) inputs, an RCA subwoofer output, and USB power. The pitch is “only 1 wire to TV.”
• What is in the box: speakers, amplifier, and “all wire and cable.” The speakers connect to the amplifier with speaker wire to gold-plated binding posts. Optional add-ons at checkout: a 1-metre stereo headphone cable, a 1-metre stereo RCA cable, or both.
• Price: $489 at the time of checking, shown against a struck-through $657. With the Bluetooth option, $518. With cable bundles, $498 to $536. We have not tracked whether the $657 price has ever been charged; if the “sale” turns out to be permanent, that is a tactic we call out elsewhere on this site, and this line will be updated. • The Bluetooth option: $29 at the time of checking ($49 when I bought mine). The product page describes it only as “Optional Bluetooth stream music without turning on your TV” and links to a manual labelled “BT dongle.” It does not say on the page that it is a USB dongle, or that it occupies one of the wired inputs. It is, and it does. See below.
• Finishes: Gloss Black or Pearl White for this bundle; Orb’s wider range includes hand-finished steel, copper and bronze.
• Trial and warranty: a “45 Day Home Trial” with what Orb calls a No Hassle Guarantee, and what the site calls a full warranty. Terms are Orb’s to state; check the current page when you order. 45-day home trial page.
• Company: Orb Audio describes itself as “a design conscious, environmentally friendly boutique audio company,” selling web-direct since 2003, with products assembled in the USA. US-based support by phone at (877) 672-2834 and email at support@orbaudio.com. About page, Contact page.

Who it is for

People whose hearing loss takes the consonants out of speech. If you turn the TV up and it gets louder but not clearer, you know the problem. Bass and volume are not what you need; you need the part of the voice that carries meaning to come through without the rest of the mix burying it. That is what these do, at the desk for calls and meetings, and in the living room for television and sports.

They are not for someone who wants a soundbar to unbox, plug in with one cable and forget. They are also not a substitute for hearing aids; they are what you use when the sound is coming from a screen and you want to hear it without headphones.

The paperwork

• Regulatory status: consumer audio equipment. Not a medical device and does not claim to be.
• Return policy: 45-day home trial per the manufacturer. Confirm who pays return shipping before ordering; the site does not say on the product page.
• Warranty: “full warranty” per the site. Details are on Orb’s current pages.
• Price honesty: struck-through “was” price on the product page; history not verified by us.

My experience: years of daily use

I use these for Zoom meetings, video calls, YouTube, sports and TV, every day. With my hearing damage, they are about the only speakers that work for me when I need voice clarity. I did not arrive at that conclusion in a two-week trial. I arrived at it over years, with every other speaker I own sitting unused because voices through them are mush and voices through these are not.

The EZ Voice claim on the box is, in my experience, true. Dialogue sits forward and stays intelligible at a volume that does not fill the house. Sports commentary, which is the hardest thing I listen to because of crowd noise behind it, is followable. On Zoom, I stopped asking people to repeat themselves. That is the whole review, really. The rest is what you should know before you order.

With my hearing damage, these are about the only speakers that work for me when I need voice clarity. Years of daily use, and I earn nothing for saying so.

What I did not like

• They are not plug and play. This is not a mini-jack soundbar. The speakers connect to the amplifier with proper speaker wire to binding posts, and then the amplifier connects to your TV or computer. Orb includes the wire, and the connectors came pre-installed on mine, so there was no stripping or fiddling. It is still a wired hi-fi setup rather than a single cable, so budget a little time and read the diagram.
• Do not pay for the Bluetooth option. I paid $49 for it; the site lists it at $29 today. What arrives is a USB Bluetooth dongle, the kind you can buy on Amazon for around $40 less than I paid. The product page does not say it is a dongle. Worse, it plugs into one of the wired inputs, so you lose an input you could have used for another device. If you want Bluetooth, buy a receiver separately and decide for yourself where it goes.
• The company is a little rough to deal with. You can tell it is a small business. On my first purchase I asked whether there was a discount for buying multiple pairs of speakers. The answer was essentially no, and a suggestion that I buy one pair for now and see how it goes. I did not need someone deciding how many speakers I wanted. It did not change the product, and it did not change my verdict. It is worth knowing so that you set your expectations at the door: excellent product, small shop.

Support test

My only contact with Orb was the pre-sales question about a multi-pair discount, answered promptly and unhelpfully, as described above. I have not needed support or warranty service once since the purchase, across years of daily use. That is its own data point.

Alternatives

I have not found another speaker that does for dialogue what these do at this price. When I do, it goes here. What to avoid in the meantime: any soundbar whose only clarity feature is a “voice” or “dialogue” button that simply boosts treble. Louder consonants are not clearer consonants.
