Who this site is for

People with hearing loss or hearing damage, and the family members trying to help them. Society builds ramps for wheelchairs and puts braille on elevator buttons. Hearing loss gets a shrug, a $6,000 quote, and a flood of $40 gadgets that promise the same result. Nobody should have to learn the difference by wasting their money.

What we cover

Anything that helps a person hear or communicate. That includes prescription and over-the-counter hearing aids, personal sound amplifiers, TV listening systems and speakers, captioning phones and apps, Bluetooth streamers and remote microphones, alerting systems for doorbells, alarms and phones, hearing protection, and the apps and services that surround all of it.

How we work

• We expose the tactics first. A product comes and goes, but a sales trick lives forever. Our Red Flags section teaches you to spot them.
• We name names. The Watchlist lists products and sellers with documented problems, with the evidence and the date we checked.
• We recommend a short list. Real Choices is deliberately small. If a product is on it, we would tell a friend to buy it.
• We evaluate before we test. Every product is run through the same records check, and the article says how far the evidence goes. The process is public on our How We Evaluate page.

Who writes it

Sound Judgment is written and edited by Scott West, a data scientist and professional evaluator who has lived with hearing loss for more than 40 years. His day job is sifting large volumes of claims, specifications, records and reviews down to a short, defensible answer, and that is exactly what the hearing industry needs done to it. Rather than unboxing every gadget, he pulls the FDA listing, the return policy, the price history and the review patterns, and tells you in one paragraph whether the product deserves your attention. Hands-on testing is saved for the products that earn it. Every article carries his name and its evidence level. Verdicts are based on regulatory records, the product’s own documentation, independent research, reader reports and, where it matters, personal use. Never on a manufacturer’s press kit.
